William Mitchell Clay was a militiamen who was in Field's company. They were one of several companies headed to do battle at Point Pleasant against the Indians. The militiamen were ordered by British-Loyalist Govenor Lord Dunmore to engage a multi-tribal confederation led by Shawnee Chief Cornstalk . Lord Dunmore tricked the Indians into thinking the militiamen were coming to sign a treaty. Lord Dunmore wanted the militiamen to attack the Indians to divert the colonists attention away from Independence from England by stirring hatred between the colonist and the Indians. On the way to Point Pleasant Field's company was encamped on the banks of the Little Meadow River on September 6, 1774. On that day William Mitchell Clay and another man named Coward were sent to hunt deer for the company and were attacked by Indians. William Mitchell Clay was killed in the attack. A little over a month later on October 10, 1774 the battle of Point Pleasant took place. The Indians were defeated, never to return again, however, the militiamen suffered heavy losses.
